Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling took to Twitter today to apologize for killing off fan-favorite Fred Weasley.

The Tweet comes on the seventeenth anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts which took place on May 2, 1998. Many will remember this as the night that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his Death Eaters attacked the students and faculty of Hogwarts.

Fred Weasley was just one of many casualties from the battle. Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and Severus Snape (who was then the standing Headmaster of Hogwarts) were also killed that night. Despite the tragedies that took place, many hail the battle as the end of the Second Wizarding War.

J.K. Rowling plans to apologize for a character death every anniversary. “Fred was the worst for me, so I started with him,” she said on Twitter. Indeed, many Muggle children were scarred by the deaths that Rowling penned, but surely not as scarred as those who lost loved ones in the battle.

Following the Battle of Hogwarts, George Weasley continued to manage Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes–the shop he co-founded with his brother. George Weasley is married to Angelina Johnson and they named their first child after Fred.
