Hulu is developing Stephen King’s fantasy ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’

Will this be a YA ‘Game of Thrones’?

Stephen King’s YA fantasy, The Eyes of the Dragon, will get a television treatment from Hulu.

Deadline is reporting that streaming service Hulu and studio Fox 21 have ordered a pilot based on King’s 1984 novel. Novelist, director and film producer Seth Grahame-Smith is attached to write the episode. Grahame-Smith’s past credits include ‘The Lego Batman Movie,’ ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ as well as 2017’s ‘It,’ also based on a novel by Stephen King.

“I am so excited to be working in the world of Stephen King with Hulu,” Grahame-Smith expressed to Deadline. “The goal for this series is to feel unlike any Stephen King adaptation before, with this rich underlying source material, and the only true fantasy book he wrote that has kings and swords and princesses. We will honor the spirit of the book and the legacy.”

The Eyes of the Dragon is an epic fantasy taking place in the Kingdom of Delain and follows the story of a prince named Peter who’s framed for the murder of his father.

Read the book’s blurb below:

Once upon a time, in the Kingdom of Delain, King Roland is murdered and his son and heir, Peter, is framed for the crime. Peter and his loyal friends must battle an evil wizard and Peter’s usurper brother, Thomas, for the throne. Imprisoned in a tower, Peter conceives an escape plan that will take him years to execute before taking on Flagg, the powerful sorcerer who has masterminded this coup.

Fan reactions to Dragon were reportedly mixed at the time, as it ventures away from the author’s signature horror writings. The book was also written for King’s children, which added to the readers’ negative reactions. But many critics still praised the story for its fairytale quality.

This isn’t the first time King’s work has appeared on Hulu. The streaming service currently runs ‘Castle Rock,’ a television show based on some of King’s stories. Hulu also isn’t a stranger to YA. It developed a pilot based on Lauren Oliver’s Delirium in 2014, though there wasn’t enough interest to spark a full-fledged series.
