Veronica Roth was present at the Chicago Elementary Petting Zoo for a special reading and appearance to promote Allegiant when she made the shocking announcement.

According to TMZ, the statement was made after a zookeeper asked a question during a Q&A session.

“I want to know why everyone else in the books got spicy love stories and Peter didn’t.”

Veronica’s response? “Peter is gay,” she said. “You don’t see it much in the books because they’re from Tris’s point of view, but it’s there. I think Peter has always masked his feelings with hate. When he and Edward broke up, he plucked his eye out.”

A seventeen minute round of applause followed the announcement.

Update: Following the announcement, Vladamir Putin has announced that the books are now banned from being read in Russia.
