The Mortal Instruments and Shadowhunters fans have recreated their favorite looks over the years as cosplay and Halloween outfits. Fans Elle and Mathilde are truly living by Jace Wayland’s wise words, “Shadowhunters: Looking Better in Black Than the Widows of our Enemies Since 1234.” Their cosplay looks will surly spark ideas for a Shadowhunters-inspired Halloween costume.
Elle (@elleRK17) has transformed into her favorite Shadowhunters characters for 3 years. Her specialty is creating accurate portrayals on a budget. Elle shops at secondhand shops to find the perfect pieces for her cosplay looks.
To create a budget-friendly look, Elle suggests being innovative and resourceful when selecting pieces to wear. For her Magnus-inspired look, she used necklaces as hip chains and wore black articles of clothing from past cosplays to cut on costs. For those looking to make one of a kind looks, Elle recommends learning basic sewing skills.
Elle recently posted pictures of her Alec Lightwood cosplay look on Twitter which generated attention from star, Matthew Daddario, who plays Alec on Freeform’s Shadowhunters.

Transforming her look to match that of a favorite character isn’t enough for Mathilde (@Mathilde_Felton). In September of 2016, she decided to embark on an 11 hours bus trip from Quebec City to visit the set of Shadowhunters in Toronto. Her trip resulted in having the perfect backdrop for her cosplay photoshoot as Isabelle Lightwood.
Mathilde has also dawned the looks of Magnus Bane, Jace Wayland, Clary Fray and Camille Belcourt over her 3 year career as a cosplayer. She plans on cosplaying as Meliorn and other versions of Magnus in the near future.
Earlier this month, Mathilde met Shadowhunters cast member Harry Shum Jr. portrays her favorite character, Magnus Bane. At the 2016 New York Comic Con, Mathilde met Shum while dressed as Magnus and the two were able to take pictures together during the event. Mathilde said Shum loved her cosplay and his compliments have encouraged her to create more Magnus-inspired looks in the future.
