First off, I read a lot of fantasy books, but The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon is easily one of my favourites.

The blurb:

Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people’s minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing…

Now, I have a confession to make. The only reason I even thought about reading this book was because of a YouTube video. Someone had an ARC of the book and claimed it was the best thing she had ever read. So, it’s got to be good, right?
When I finally got my hands on a copy I couldn’t wait to start it – and so the journey into Scion London began.

This book was not what I was expecting. I have to admit, part of me was expecting the same old ‘heroine is special, heroine falls in love with “bad boy”, heroine and newly-acceptable “bad boy” have to save the world”. I was wrong. Yes, there are elements of romance in this book – we all love a bit of romance though, don’t we. However it is nowhere near the forefront of the story.

Samantha Shannon has done a brilliant job with making you feel like you are part of the story. You become Paige. You feel her anger, her pain, her hatred. You become completely involved in her world. I genuinely had to reintroduce myself to reality every time I put the book down – not that that happened very often!

A very helpful – yet initially confusing – page at the very beginning of the book is “The Seven Orders of Clairvoyance“. I had to refer to this frequently throughout the novel to keep myself familiar with the terminology.

Alright, so I don’t want to reveal much about The Bone Season because I want you to read it with a clear mind. All you need to know is that it is more than a worthwhile read, and will leave you wanting more. Luckily, there isn’t long to wait as The Mime Order is due to be released later this year!

Finally, I noticed a familiar name on the inside cover, giving the review of “Truly extraordinary and thrilling”. It was a surprise to see Andy Serkis’ name there, I have to admit, but if Golum likes it then it must be good.

Eleanor is an English graduate and Medieval Studies student looking to use her skills to help save the planet. She adores reading and knows books will always be at the heart of her life, no matter where her career takes her.
