Cassandra Clare to write adult trilogy about Magnus Bane
Shadowhunters author Cassandra Clare is taking a step into adult literature.
Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Clare will be launching a new trilogy based in the Shadowhunters world, only instead of writing for teens she’ll be writing for adults. The trilogy will focus on fan favorite character Magnus Bane.
“Magnus Bane has emerged as one of the most fun and fascinating characters for me to bring to life,” Clare said in a press release. “I’m excited to dig in even more deeply in these three volumes devoted to Magnus, his past, his future, and his present.”
Clare will reportedly co-write the series with author Wesley Chu, winner of 2015’s John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. He’s also the author of The Lives of Tao. Chu celebrated the announcement on his blog by penning a short letter to Magnus:
How are you? We’re going to have a splendid time together, and by splendid, I mean sorry. Not really.
“These books and characters are iconic, and Magnus is a fan favorite,” said Chu to EW. “I can’t wait to give them all the things they deserve. And probably a few they don’t. Sorry, Magnus.”
The books will be published by Saga Press, a fantasy and science-fiction imprint of Simon & Schuster. Clare’s past Shadowhunters series (The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices) have also been published by imprints of Simon & Schuster in the U.S.
“Magnus Bane has quickly become one of the most complex and iconic characters in fantasy,” said Saga Press Vice President Justin Chanda. “I am sure fans will be thrilled to find out more about his life and times. I certainly am!”
The first book in the series is expected to hit shelves November 2017 in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
