July 2020 Update: Victoria Aveyard has announced her new book, Realm Breaker. Click here to learn what we know!
So, just what is Victoria Aveyardâs new book series? Thanks to some tweets from last week, we have a few clues.
Hereâs what we know: Aveyardâs working on a YA high-fantasy. We donât yet know how many books will be in the series, but weâre definitely excited to see the amazing epicness thatâs bound to fill those pages!
What is âhigh fantasy?â
High fantasy refers to a specific genre of fantasy thatâs set in an alternate â or âsecondaryâ â world from our own. A book series like Harry Potter is not high fantasy because the Wizarding World takes place alongside our normal Muggle world.
The go-to prime example of high fantasy is J.R.R. Tolkienâs Lord of the Rings series. George R.R. Martinâs A Song of Ice and Fire (a known favorite of Aveyardâs) is another good example. These stories typically feature kingdoms, kings, queens and knights â though they donât have to.
If you want some more recent examples of high fantasy in YA, look nor further than Sabaa Tahirâs Ember in the Ashes series and Tomi Adeyemiâs Children of Blood and Bone.
This is a notable departure for Aveyard, whose Red Queen series was set in a far post-apocalyptic America.
What will Victoria Aveyardâs new series be called?
The title of Aveyardâs new series isnât known yet. And letâs be honest, weâre probably a long ways from knowing, seeing as sheâs only just getting to work on the writing. Thankfully, weâve been given a hint though.
Aveyard tweeted that sheâs referring to the new book series as âSBâ for the time being. What could that mean?

What high fantasy elements will be in SB?
Again â another question we canât fully answer. However, we do know that this new world will include royalty.
Aveyard confirmed that sheâs back to writing about kings and queens, although they donât sound very friendly, according to a tweet.

Will there be romance in SB?
Those who shipped Mare and Cal and Mare and Maven (and everyone else) will be happy to know that, yes, Aveyard plans to include some romantic elements in SB.
Responding to a fanâs comment on Twitter, she responded by simply saying, âYes.â

The dumb part of me wants to read this book but the smart part of me knows that this book will make me cry.
