Leigh Bardugo reacts to Netflix’s ‘Shadow and Bone’ theme song

The music fits in perfectly with the Grishaverse!

Fans have been waiting all year to catch their first peek at a ‘Shadow and Bone’ teaser trailer from Netflix. They’ll still have to wait for the time being, but now they can at least listen to the show’s theme song.

Author Leigh Bardugo — the mastermind behind the Grishaverse who penned the Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows novels — revealed the theme song alongside showrunner Eric Heisserer during New York Comic Con’s virtual convention.

Update:The first ‘Shadow and Bone’ trailer has arrived from Netflix

“I love it, I love it so much!” Bardugo said after revealing the Shadow and Bone theme song. “We kind of had to beg to share just a little taste … I think it’s so beautiful and I get so emotional hearing it.”

Joseph Trapanese composed the score. Trapanese’s past work includes the final two Divergent films as well as ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Tron: Legacy,’ which he worked on with Daft Punk.

The Grisha theme is a dark but gorgeous Slavic theme filled with heavy strings and drums that slowly crescendo into a suspenseful climax. Heisserer said he thinks the score fits with Bardugo’s Russian-inspired world.

“There’s an Eastern-European feel that still makes it second-world,” Heisserer said. “We’re still building our own thing, but you get the roots of it.”

You can check out the panel to listen to the theme yourself (skip to about 21 minutes in):

Trapanese is still actively composing music for the score.

“I just got sent new score pieces just yesterday,” Heisserer said during the panel.

Likewise, Netflix is still hard at work at putting the show together. Bardugo said a trailer doesn’t exist yet so fans will still have to wait to see their favorite characters in action.

Netflix first ordered the show at the beginning of 2019. The cast, which includes actor Ben Barnes, concluded filming in February, right before the pandemic hit.

Still no word on a release date.
